Can you add some info regarding how much an average user might make or what you’ve made?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 22 points23 points  (6 children)

I make almost $2000/month working around 20 - 25 hours a week

[–]BTCUser_ 27 points28 points  (5 children)

In my first month teaching English online (PalFish Kids Course) I went from $0 to $1500, and that's with a semi slow schedule. The pay per hour starts at $17/hr and can go up to $22+/hr. It's really not that hard either, basically reading kid books to children. Also, no bachelors degree required :)

I have a YouTube channel with free PalFish coaching, how to's, tips & tricks, check it out https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuMvo_RpC77w-Ay0SoQ3ysQ

[–]summonern0x 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Possibly, probably stupid question, but you need to be bilingual, right?

[–]BTCUser_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope, I speak about 2 words of Chinese, hello and thank you. If you need help just PM me :D

[–]live2eatfood[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No! It’s called TPR - look it up my friend 😊

[–]Dexter_of_Trees 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This doesn’t seem realistic

[–]BTCUser_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not? What questions do you have? It's completely doable. I had almost no prior teaching experience, I took a 150 hour master TEFL course and got hired. Really not that difficult if you're determined to push through a change in work style.

[–]MDBerlin24 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Is there anything like this for non natives, non US? Such as EU based / Dutch alternatives?

[–]completelyperdue 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Is this a contract 1099 position or is it one where taxes are taken out?

[–]TightHousemother 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All online teaching gigs are 1099, so you must factor that into your earnings

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what that is but you have to do your own taxes. They won’t be taken out of your paycheck.

[–]TrustySideDick 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Once you're an employee are your required to recruit others?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get a tiny commission from every SUCCESSFUL referral so I’ve put a lot of time and effort into my FREE mentor program. (Compared to VIPkid and other companies that pay $150/referral, Palfish only offers a $30 incentive so I’m not making crazy profits) I honestly just love and I find that it works really well for me so I wanted to share it with others.

[–]shlamiel 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Thank you for sharing this information.

Is there a limit (hours per week)?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No there is not!

[–]shlamiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

[–]projectsbyca 4 points5 points  (7 children)

What are peak teaching hours?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 7 points8 points  (6 children)

5pm-9pm Beijing time

[–]jlbd783 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For those in the U.S. not good with time zones, Beijing is 12 hours ahead of NY (for example and because it's an easy conversion to start). So 5pm-9pm there is 5am-9am EST and 2am-6am PST.

[–]BadBalloons 2 points3 points  (4 children)

5pm-9pm Beijing time

RIP. I wish there was a program that was more PST-friendly.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You’re telling me! I teach 2am-6am 😂

[–]BadBalloons 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I tried signing up for VIPKid based on a post someone made about it the other week, because I need to start earning money really quickly, but there were a lot of hoops to jump through to get "qualified", they wanted a very particular teaching style that I struggled with, and they were very picky with how they wanted the "classroom" set up and what the video looked like (what the lighting and angles were, etc). I wound up needing to put more money into it than I had to spare (buying things like a laptop stand, ethernet cable, classroom 'decor' and supplies, and lighting). Is it the same thing with your work on Palfish? Are they super picky? Or is it still uncrowded enough that I could get by with "shadows on my face" and a wifi/cellular internet connection, etc?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah I know what you mean. It’s right off the phone so you don’t need anything else. You will need a kid-friendly backdrop but that can just be one colorful poster. And a few props. What’s good about Palfish is they actually reimburse you for props. They give you $15 to buy props!! Take advantage of that.

And the application process is super simple, it’s just one recording which is pretty much to show that you can speak English and know how to talk to kids haha

[–]ImpactGolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here

I am in Panama, I am dong 3am-8am mon-fri.

[–]DaintySaluki 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I’m in the UK, are taxes already taken out of the pay or will I need to fill out a tax return?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you will have to do your own taxes

[–]xRevolted 7 points8 points  (9 children)

Native speaker from US/Canada/UK/Ireland/Aus/New Zealand

rip

[–]only37mm 3 points4 points  (8 children)

This is always the catch. I've yet to find an online job that seriously pays people and doesn't need you to be 1) a native English speaker, and 2) living in the US.

[–]SpiralTap304 14 points15 points  (7 children)

I don’t even mean to be a dick but Asian countries are paying for white people. Deluxe white people from the US. It is seen as some sort of status symbol that their kid is learning English from a REAL speaker.

I don’t agree with it but it happens.

[–]only37mm 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Oh, yeah, I know that.It doesn't bother me all that much, to be honest, I just wish I could find any online job that doesn't require me to be from the US, UK, Australia, or some shit like that. Back to the topic at hand, I fucking hate it because I can't win anyway; my first language is Spanish, but I'm not from Spain, which means they won't hire me as a Spanish teacher, because I don't speak real Spanish.

[–]Cant-Take-Jokes 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Is your accent quite thick? If it isn’t, I wonder if they’d even notice. Many people from Puerto Rico have accents but English is their ( second ) native language, you might be able to kind of slide under the radar with an excuse like that?

[–]only37mm 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I used to work at an English only call center, and many customers were surprised to learn I'm not American, but I'm not sure if that was because I'm good, or a big part of my colleagues just had a thick accent. I'm also based somewhere else, and suck at the whole IP/proxy thing, so even if I tried that, they'd know at least where I'm at.

[–]Cant-Take-Jokes 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Do you really think they’d go as far as to check your IP? 😰

[–]only37mm -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Idk, it makes me nervous doing things 'illegally'. I'll try tho.

[–]OneLessThought 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd bet your safe. It says native speaker, not born in, citizen of, lacking an accent or living in. Give it a go!

[–]only37mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! ♥

[–]Any_Classic 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Sounds rad, I will message you! How does the payout work?

[–]SamJaYxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In for reply

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The payment comes out of our Palfish wallet every 1st of the month and goes into our Payoneer account by the 7th. Then you can choose to transfer that amount into your bank account or to order a Payoneer MasterCard to use the money.

[–]Any_Classic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks. Once a month payment is rough though. I've never heard of Payoneer before either but I'll look into it.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not the best but it does pay. Can confirm haha. No worries - do your research. I also have a promo code that gives us $25 each for signing up if you’re interested.

[–]patijerina 2 points3 points  (2 children)

How long does the TEFL cert you've been posting take to complete?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Took me 2 hours

[–]MissMisfits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going to ask the same question, thank you!

[–]Katatoniczka 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What are the options for non native speakers in your experience? Will be graduating soon so I may consider teaching through some of those websites. I've got some experience working as an ESL teacher in real life, does it help somehow? No TEFL but I guess I could get the Groupon one... Oh got a C2 English proficiency certificate too.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Unfortunately Palfish is quite strict about nationalities. You will have to be from: US/ Canada / UK/ Ireland/ Australia/ New Zealand (or at least have a drivers license or some sort of ID from there)

There are plenty of other companies out there that accept non natives though.

One of them is iTutorGroup .

Requirements: - Bachelor's degree or above; - TESOL, TEFL, or equivalent (if you don’t have one I can help you get one for $20: https://www.offers.internationalopenacademy.com/astrella/course/advanced-120-tefl-course ) - Able to commit to 10 peak hours/week

The process: Click on the sign up link below 😊After submitting your application, you will proceed on selecting an interview time. It will only take less than 5 minutes to complete the application. Feel free to select the earliest interview time, they will always be ready for you! After the interview, shall you pass the selection, you will be contacted within 24 hours with the onboarding steps.

I’d be happy to help you with the application and coach you through the interview process.

[–]KulwinderArora 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Are we eligible if we are from India? My wife is a school teacher and I believe this will be a natural fit on the side.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you for the detailed response! I will share this with my wife 🙂🙂

Will message you if she needs assistance of any kind. You are doing great work here!

[–]thepeever 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It sounds very interesting and I may very well sign up. I am American and I have a TESOL.

I am just a bit curious, you teach on your phone? How does that actually work?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yes! It’s all off the phone. It uses your camera to broadcast while you’re teaching, all the slides are on the app, which allows you to draw, drag, spin, pop, do everything!

[–]thepeever 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I am 63 years old and hard of hearing, can I use a headset? 😎

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you need 😊

[–]Imatwatface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds good. Real good.

[–]JabasMyBitch 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What is the interview process like? Do I need a dedicated space to teach from? As in, do I need certain items or a certain look to the space?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - there will be a 25 min demo recording where one of the questions you must answer is: Explain your background and your props.

[–]Sorenjx4 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is there an age restriction? I'm 17, but very interested.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m not sure there is but I haven’t seen many 17 year olds. You are welcome to try your luck! In saying that, parents might not want a 17 year old teaching their 13 year old, so I’m not sure how much success you would have. My advice would be to get out there and gain some worldly experience: travel, study, work elsewhere then come back to Palfish!

[–]Sorenjx4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

alright, thanks! It looks like i have to be 18 to use payoneer aswell, so i’ll come back once i’m 18 :) Thanks for all of your help, i appreciate it a lot

[–]SonHero 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Excuse me - are you white? Do you/anyone know how this fares for Asian Americans? =)

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’m Asian! Check out my blog for a photo of me if you’d like haha

[–]SonHero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh shoot, my bad, lol! Your blog is so clean, props. Thank you =)

[–]IJustWantHer2BOK 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm a student graduating this summer. I have already completed all 12 required hours for my TEFL cert but won't receive it until I get my degree. I already have extensive real world, paid tutoring experience, as well as experience working with children from over a dozen countries aged 11-15.

Is there any way I could get highered in spite of the technicality I don't officially have my TEFL cert? I could prove I have completed it with a degree audit.

Sorry if this is too specific of a question. I'm always skeptical that these posts are recruiment tools, which is totally cool with me, but I figure maybe this is a good opportunity to ask.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not a worry! Ask anything you want.

Unfortunately they ask for the actual certificate. They verify it by checking the certificate number. You can try uploading another document and just giving them your real number, if you know it? Or if you are graduating this summer, you could just wait?

[–]IJustWantHer2BOK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to end up waiting but by that point I'll probably apply to a different program requiring a B.A. for a bit more money. I'm essentially killing time til then living off savinga but I would have loved to start earning money earlier than in 3 months.

[–]poet_artist 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Do you have to find students or do they assign you?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

They assign you trials and this gives you an opportunity to sell yourself and if the student likes you they will become your regular. Otherwise you will have to find the students yourself. There’s a lot of self marketing on this app: moments, live broadcast, video podcasts etc.

[–]poet_artist 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Ahhh okay. I just got approved yesterday and I’m still a bit confused about the platform. So I guess I’ll just have to play around with it. I’m surprised there’s no lesson plans. Usually companies have those pre made.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There are lesson plans haha feel free to add me as your referral and I can help you find those and anything else you need

[–]poet_artist 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Added!

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sent you a message on Palfish 😊

[–]AshMTGO 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What are my chances of being accepted as a black male from the US with a slightly south accent?

I can attach a voice sample if you want.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll get accepted that’s no issue! The only thing I should mention is that kids and parents choose their own teachers so it just depends on what they’re after. But I don’t know anything about your teaching / marketing skills or how your personality will match theirs so I can’t really say how successful you will be. I’d say it’s worth a try?

[–]sexyfundies 1 point2 points  (9 children)

I think with PalFish you need a degree

[–]live2eatfood[S] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Nah you don’t

[–]sexyfundies 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I applied and it was asking for one

[–]SelfishThailand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Palfish kids requires a bachelor's. The general palfish app doesn't require a bachelor's.

[–]live2eatfood[S] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

You must be applying for the wrong thing...

[–]sexyfundies 5 points6 points  (2 children)

There’s only one palfish haha

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’d like to message me I’d be happy to guide you step-by-step and show you that there is no bachelors degree needed. Otherwise feel free to show me where you were asked to provide one.

[–]live2eatfood[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Exactly 😂

[–]WeirdAlfredo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No degree at all?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will only need a TEFL/TESOL

[–]milkyway_mermaid 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Should I get the TEFL prior to starting the application process?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up to you. You can either set it up and complete the application then just upload the TEFL at the end or you can do the TEFL first. Doesn’t matter

[–]trickmind 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is that TESOL course accredited by any organisation?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s fully accredited and internationally accepted. I’ve applied for like 10 online ESL jobs and they all accepted it.

[–]wifiwoman 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know it can be used in the U.K. But is there a U.K. Alternative to this so you can get paid in GBP currency?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately if you don’t have a Chinese bank account (pay in RMB) you will have to accept payment in USD.

[–]futureocean 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can I use palfish even though I’m from the UK?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Definitely!

[–]Zenifold 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is this company based on a referral based system?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a tiny commission from every SUCCESSFUL referral so I’ve put a lot of time and effort into my FREE mentor program. (Compared to VIPkid and other companies that pay $150/referral, Palfish only offers a $30 incentive so it’s not crazy)

[–]Arguswest 0 points1 point  (6 children)

TEFL?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

A certificate that qualifies you to teach English as a foreign language. You can get one here for $20.

[–]Arguswest 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Is this only accepted at this specific site or do other ESL companies accept it also.?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I’ve applied to 10 online ESL jobs and they’ve all accepted it. However please do your own research and make an educated decision based on your future potential employers.

[–]Arguswest -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Lol. Thats a pretty vague answer.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sorry you’ve asked a pretty vague question. I just don’t wanna be responsible if 5 years down the line you apply for a job that won’t accept it. I’m saying it has worked for me as my situation didn’t allow me to do an on-site course and I needed a quick TEFL certification to be able to teach online 😊

[–]Arguswest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on.

[–]Cant-Take-Jokes 0 points1 point  (6 children)

You mentioned in one of your other comments that as long as you have an ID from one of the countries ( US, UK, ect ) you’re good. Do you need an address? Also, can that ID be a passport or passport card?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Hi yes - this only works if you have a native neutral accent. If you have a thick foreign accent and have a drivers license from the US, they will be able to tell you are not native in your interview and you will be rejected.

This is unfortunate but these parents want to pay for teachers to teach their kids to speak in a native accent. Otherwise they would just hire a tutor from home. Sorry this is just the case 😔

[–]Cant-Take-Jokes 0 points1 point  (4 children)

That’s fine, but is an address required? I’m white with a neutral US accent, but I do not have an address. I can use someone else’s, but is it necessary, or does a passport or passport card work as ‘ID’?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Sorry why don’t you have an address? You can work from anywhere you just need to prove your nationality from one of those countries, so yes the passport works!

[–]Cant-Take-Jokes 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I’ve been unemployed for several months and was evicted so I’m couchsurfing/vagabonding/carsleepin’ haha

Thanks for the info! This is great to know!!! Appreciate the prompt response!

[–]live2eatfood[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Oh no! Sorry I was so insensitive 🙈 I just thought you meant you were traveling. You will need stable internet, a quiet environment, and a “classroom” backdrop though!

[–]Cant-Take-Jokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that could be tricky but not impossible! And it’s okay :) Thanks again!

[–]coffeeandcats13 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Is there a min number of hours?? What's the time schedule for the east coast?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

No minimum. EST peak hours is 6am-10am

[–]coffeeandcats13 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh boo, so not 5am? My kids wake around 6:30am

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can teach 24/7 but those are the peak hours. Doesn’t mean you won’t get classes then!

[–]coffeeandcats13 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So I looked further into palfish, and I'm finding conflicting information about minimum hours. You say no minimum, and I read one site that says 3.5 and one that says 4 hour minimum teaching per week required. I also read 3.5 hours have to be during peak times. Not sure if this info is old. Can you clarify?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are tons of conflicting answers, but I asked my admin and she said there's no minimum required. You just won't get pop-ups if you don't open 7 peak times (3.5 hours). Pop-ups are emergency lessons that you can pick up when another teacher is absent to their lesson.

[–]Sleepysheepish 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you need a TEFL certificate if you just want to do free talk?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing conflicting responses for this but I believe you do. The current freetalk tutors can’t accept new students, they are only allowed to teach their regulars.

[–]AshleighElizabethOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is the invitation code section? Thanks

[–]justbrowsing8862 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This sounds amazing. But if you can only teach from 2 am -6 am PT, how can you work unlimited hours? Sorry I must be missing something. Thank you for sharing this with us!!

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That’s not when you can only teach. Those are just peak hours. You can try teaching during the day Beijing time but obviously most kids are at school.

[–]justbrowsing8862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow ok! I’m definitely gonna look into this, sounds fascinating! I’ll make sure I give you credit! Thank you!!

[–]agentfem 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It won't allow me to upload a photo when making the account, so can't proceed with registering. Do you know if there's some sort of trick, or is just a glitch?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my referrals have had that happen and sometimes you just have to close all your apps, make sure its updated, and try again. It’s just a glitch.

[–]methodbear 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I can't get the verification code for my phone. Is there a work-around to that issue?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes the common glitch! I’ll message you

[–]Cocobear8305 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I signed up but I don’t see where to put your code.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man no worries. I’ve included detailed instructions with screenshots on this page: https://pathtopalfish.com/free-mentor-program/

But here are the steps:

1) Go to “Me” on the bottom right corner of your home screen

2) Click on Settings (top-right gear icon)

3) Add me as your inviter: 72796812

4) Shoot me a message on Palfish so I know you have joined and I will give you access to the Free Mentor Program!

[–]Emcee910 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tefl course that’s $20. Does this have any effect on getting hired?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn’t affected me. At least not for online ESL jobs. Not sure how well it would work for real onsite classrooms.

[–]Reekhart 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you get hired living outside the US?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes for sure! You can work from anywhere you want. As long as you have stable internet, quiet environment, and a classroom backdrop.

[–]wtf_seriously_stahp 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's the minimum amount of hours per week required for PalFish?

[–]live2eatfood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no minimum

[–]louderharderfaster 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is Palfish hiring, er, "older" teachers? I am 50 and have lots of experience teaching.

[–]live2eatfood[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You’re not even old dude haha I’ve helped hire 60+ year olds 😂

[–]louderharderfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok!

Registering for the TEFL now. I have been considering VIPkids but the interview process seems lengthy and glitchy. Will be in touch once I complete the TEFL course.

[–]delta0151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help me get hired!

[–]Mzansi123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly not available for South Africans. What nonsense!
