Silver Alert for 80-year-old Las Cruces Man
Police have issued a Silver Alert for an 80-year-old Las Cruces man who was reported missing Thursday afternoon and could be in danger if not located soon.
Thomas Joseph Caperton, 80, was last seen about 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, near the Albertsons grocery store at 2501 N. Main St. in Las Cruces. It’s believed Caperton left the area on foot. His direction of travel is unknown. He resides on the 100 block of west Greening Avenue which is relatively close to the Albertsons store.
Caperton is 5-feet-8-inches tall and weighs approximately 120 pounds. He was last seen wearing faded Levi’s blue jeans, a navy blue long-sleeve shirt, dark sandals and gray socks.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Thomas Joseph Caperton is asked to call 911 immediately. See More
Man Suspected of Sexually Assaulting Young Girl
Las Cruces police h...ave arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl on numerous occasions.
Kelly James Scoughton, 52, is charged with four third-degree felony counts of child abuse, two first-degree felony counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, one second-degree felony count of sexual exploitation of a child and one fourth-degree felony count of false imprisonment. Scoughton also faces four misdemeanor counts of enticement of a child.
Investigators learned that on Sept. 2, 2020, a 5-year-old girl disclosed to her grandmother that Scoughton, a relative, sexually assaulted her when she was at his home. Investigators interviewed several relatives and conducted a safe-house interview with the young girl. Investigators learned that Scoughton, on several occasions, sexually assaulted or had illegal contact with the young victim.
Investigators also learned that Scoughton took at least one inappropriate photo of the 5-year-old girl and, at least once, held the victim against her will.
Investigators obtained a warrant for Scoughton’s arrest. He was arrested Thursday morning and is initially being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. See More
