This policy explains what we collect, why, and what we do with it when you use Archive.st.

1. Information We Collect
When you use Archive.st, we may collect:
- URLs you submit for archiving, and the content retrieved from them
- IP addresses, for rate limiting, abuse prevention and security
- Browser information such as user agent strings, recorded with sessions
- Basic usage data such as access times and service interactions, in standard server logs
- Account data, if you register: your chosen username, and cryptographic hashes of your password and recovery code
- A recovery email address, only if you are a Pro member and choose to add one
- Billing identifiers from Stripe if you subscribe, such as a customer and subscription reference
2. What We Do Not Collect
- We do not require an email address, real name, or any other personal identifier to create an account or to archive pages.
- We do not receive or store payment card details. Card data is handled entirely by Stripe.
- We do not store your password or recovery code in a readable form. We cannot tell you what they are.
3. How We Use Your Information
- Providing and maintaining the archiving service
- Preventing abuse, enforcing rate limits, and keeping the service secure
- Operating accounts, subscriptions and billing
- Responding to legal requests and DMCA notices
- Diagnosing faults and improving reliability
4. Information Sharing
We share information only in these circumstances:
- Stripe, our payment processor, for subscription billing
- Legal requirements, when required by law, court order, or a valid DMCA notice
- Business transfers, in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale
We do not sell your personal information.
5. Public Nature of Archives
Please note that:
- Archived content is publicly accessible by default
- URLs you submit may be visible to others in public listings
- Archive links can be shared and indexed by search engines
- Unlisted archives are hidden from listings but are not private — anyone with the link can open them
- We cannot guarantee the privacy of archived content
6. DMCA Notices
If you submit a DMCA notice, we record the details you provide, including your name, contact details and the URLs concerned, in order to process and document the request. A copy of each legal notice may be sent to the Lumen project for publication; Lumen redacts personal contact information but in many cases will not redact your name. See our DMCA page.
7. Cookies
We use a single cookie, set only when you sign in, to keep you signed in. It contains a random session identifier and nothing else. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
8. Data Retention
- Archived content is retained indefinitely unless removed under our Terms or a valid legal request
- Account records are retained while the account exists
- Server and security logs are retained for a limited period for abuse prevention
- Billing records are retained by Stripe and by us as required for accounting
9. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to:
- Request information about data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data, subject to legal limits and to the public archival nature of the service
- Object to certain processing activities
Because accounts are pseudonymous, we may be unable to identify you or link data to you without the credentials for the account concerned.
10. Security
We implement reasonable security measures, including hashed credentials, encrypted connections, and restricted administrative access. No internet service can be guaranteed completely secure.
11. Children's Privacy
Our service is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years of age.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Continued use of our service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
